In optics, a prism is defined as a transparent solid body that has three rectangular lateral surfaces and two triangular faces that are inclined at an angle.
Solution
When two prisms are placed inverted to each other, the first prism causes dispersion of the white ray, whereas the second prism causes the reunification of all colours to again yield the white light.
The first prism disperses white light into its seven constituent colours and forms the spectrum. The other inverted prism recombines all seven colours and gives white light.
- The first prism splits the light into seven colours due to various angles of deflection
- The second prism combines the spectrum along a single ray and the colours again converge to give white light as the emergent light.
